A peek at the Trading Journal

From time to time I like to share some of my Trading Journal. Maybe you benefit, maybe not, but I don’t mind sharing my thoughts on why I am in a trade – or what I am doing to manage it. The comments/messages that I place out on twitter are likely missing parts of my thought process so this helps to bring it altogether.

Here is a snapshot of some of my open positions showing a variety of data points on the trade:

As you can see, most of these trades have an option component. The option piece(s) are either for additional income/boost to the trade return or they are in place to protect gains.

I have numerous sheets where I keep earnings trade info (like EPS, Rev, etc), info on upcoming catalysts, guidance info, etc. I also have a Playbook section that lays out my trading strategies with several actual trades that I did — and how I exited using the strategy.

If you don’t keep a journal, consider making the effort now. You can do it in your own way, tracking what is important to your trading process. Worth the effort in my opinion, especially when you want to review what you did in prior trades months later.

  1. I admit to being lazy with the journal and it costs $$. This is a simple but effective way to do it – thank you for sharing I now have been kicked in the pants to do it right.

  2. It’s remarkable to pay a quick visit this web site and reading the views of all friends on the topic
of this piece of writing, while I am also zealous of getting knowledge.
